Beat the “winter blues”

As June starts, it brings with it the closest thing we have to winter in Kenya. Winter makes the skies grey and gloomy, with the occasional rainy days. Here are three things you can do to keep yourself happy and motivated despite the gloomy weather:

Exercise

The virtues of exercise are literally too many to count. Exercise gets the endorphins to kick in, raising your mood, and also helps you to feel better about your physical abilities. The more physically competent you feel, the better your mood, and this gets a positive cycle going. Exercise also keeps your brain working more efficiently, improving your cognitive functioning and making you a better thinker. Definitely a good thing.

Leave the house

It may be cold outside, but fresh air is always a trigger that gets the good vibes going. It’s always more appealing to sit indoors, miserable and feeling self-absorbed and moody. Our brains and bodies need stimulation and they need daylight to switch on and help maintain some of our essential vitamins and neurotransmitters. Put some bright colours on and go outside. Remember – there’s no such thing as bad weather, only inappropriate clothes.

Play some Music

Ditch the sad songs. Music that is upbeat or relaxing can really boost your mood. If you aren’t feeling cheerful enough to dance yourself into happiness, just put some happy music on quietly in the background.

If you are feeling upset or anxious, go on YouTube and search for the sound of water flowing will release serotonin which will soothe your jagged nerves and restore calm.
