A guide to working from home (with kids)

The kids have been at home for the last couple of months and it seems like it’s going to be a while before schools reopen. At the beginning it was nice having them home but now the worry is streaking in on the lack of structure. What can you do to keep them out of trouble while they are at home and you are a little occupied?

Here is a quick and easy guide to finding balance when you are working from home with the kids.

1.Block out your time

Multitasking is a great asset to have when you are trying to work through interruptions. But it gets very little done. It helps to set your schedule into shorter blocks that allow you to focus on work for about two hours and then focus on them for another two. It also builds structure where they begin to respect your time when they know when they will have your full attention.

  1. Prepare your colleagues

Knowing you’re not alone is a good step. Letting your colleagues know that you have kids in the house prepares them for the inevitable noises that will come during calls. This means that everyone is less likely to be distracted when it happens.

  1. Keep them entertained

Keep your kids occupied while you work. A puzzle, some school work, cartoons, a movie …whatever works for you. You can also work around their nap schedule. If you must work in the same room as them make good use of the mute button when you are in your meeting. Snacks also work wonders. Try out sandwiches with Prestige margarine.

There isn’t a one size fits all for handling your kids while at home but sooner or later you will find a balance that works for you.
