It’s not soo Sweet this Month

November is World Diabetes Awareness Month.

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder which occurs when one’s own immune system attacks and destroys insulin-producing cells of the pancreas. The result is elevated blood sugar (hyperglycaemia), which leads to multiple organ failure over time.

There are broadly two types of diabetes: Type 1 is an autoimmune condition. It happens when your body attacks your pancreas with antibodies. The organ is damaged and doesn’t make insulin. It requires daily administration of artificial insulin by means of injection or insulin pump. Type 2 is when you have type 2 diabetes, your pancreas usually creates some insulin. But either it’s not enough or your body doesn’t use it like it should. Insulin resistance, when your cells don’t respond to insulin, usually happens in fat, liver, and muscle cells. It is generally managed by a combination of dietary control and medication in the form of tablets.

The immediate signs of diabetes include but are not limited to; increased appetite, increased thirst and the need to urinate frequently, especially at night.

A few tips on how to prevent Diabetes;

  • Get active every day – this does not mean you need long hours of exercise. You could simply walk briskly for 30 minutes daily. Working your muscles every day improves their ability to use insulin and absorb glucose. The more you work your muscles, the more they can use up more insulin and absorb more glucose.
  • Improve your diet – Avoid sugary drinks. Drink water and eat your fruits. Choose whole grain products over refined grains and processed carbohydrates. Eat a balanced and healthy diets.
  • Cook with healthy oils – Healthy oils, such as as Rinsun Sunflower Oil and Olivia Olive Oil are especially formulated for healthy living. Here’s a look at some healthy recipes: https://www.kapa-oil.com/category/recipes/

We highly recommend that you consult a medical practitioner if you suspect that you or a loved one has diabetes.
