House flies can be a major nuisance. Thankfully, getting rid of them need not be rocket science. There are several DIY methods of eliminating or at least reducing these little rascals.
Here are some inexpensive home remedies that are entirely natural and risk-free to your health and food:
Essential oils
These have proven just how essential they are, as far as treating houseflies is concerned. Essential oils such as lavender, eucalyptus, peppermint may be kind to your nose, but have proven tough on houseflies. Spraying any of these scents in different areas of your home keeps those areas clean and safe from flies.
An alternative is to mix any of the oils with some water in a bowl, deep a cloth in it and cover the cloth in a container for a few hours. Remove the lid and place the container in a fly infested area.
Apple Cider Vinegar
ACV is one of the most effective ways to get rid of flies. Pour some apple cider vinegar in a bowl and add some Toss liquid detergent. Flies get attracted to the aroma produced by the solution; they will come to it but won’t be able to escape as they are likely to drown.
Cucumber
Cucumber fragrance prevents flies from laying eggs where present. Place a few slices in areas they like to breed, such as by the trash can. Placing a few in the perimeter of your house can also prove effective in preventing flies from entering your house.
Honey
The sticky nature of honey coupled with their sweet aroma makes it the perfect trap for flies. Once the flies descend on the honey, they get stuck and eventually die. Any fruit jam will also do the trick.
Wine
This may not be too popular with wine lovers considering they may have to waste some of that fine wine but it’s totally worth getting rid of the annoyance caused by flies. Flies are enticed by fermentation and wine makes the perfect candidate for the job. Place a half-filled glass of wine in a fly-infested area and leave it to sit for a while. Flies will get attracted to it and drown in the wine.
