Light Up Diwali

It’s November already and the month is teeming with special occasions; No shave November, World Children’s Day, and Diwali. This month we’ll focus on the Festival of Lights – Diwali.

It’s one of the biggest holidays of the year mostly celebrated by the Indian community. Diwali is a five-day celebration that includes good food, fireworks, and special candles and lamps. It gets its name from the row (Avali) of clay lamps (Deepa) that they use outside their homes to symbolize the inner light that protects them from spiritual darkness. The festival is equivalent to Christmas for Christians.

Days before Diwali, the celebrants will prepare by decorating their homes with diyas (special oil lamps) and rangolis (colorful art patterns consisting of circles). During Diwali, people wear their finest clothes, illuminate their homes with diyas, and perform ceremonies of Lakshmi the goddess of prosperity and wealth. Fireworks are also lit, and mithai(sweets) and gifts are shared.

You cannot enjoy Diwali without savory delicacies. You don’t’ have to feel guilty about enjoying your favorite treats like samosas, barfi, karanji, and others. There’s so much to cook and enjoy. And remember you have Prestige Margarine to make those savory pastries and Mandazi, Rina, and Rinsun to give you a helping hand in the kitchen.

During Diwali, make the festive occasion special for others too. Consider donating your used items that are still in great condition to a children’s home. Also, consider donating some kitchen utensils that you don’t use to people who might need them.

You can also spread the festive cheer by making and handing out Diwali treats to family, friends, and neighbors. To bond with friends and family, you can hold a games night at home. It’s a cool way to have a good time.

Games that rekindle memories like charades, card games, and others will have everyone enjoying themselves. Another great way to enjoy Diwali is having a movie night. You’ll have a blast with friends and family as you hang out to catch a movie.

And as you have fun, be considerate of those around you. Bright lights and crackers are part of Diwali celebrations. Bursting crackers for an hour or so can be exhilarating, but for the elderly, infants, and toddlers, this can turn out to be annoying and frightening.

Whatever you do as we approach the festive season, please be considerate of those around you. Enjoy.
