The Difference Between Fashion and Style and Why It Should Matter to You

Fashion and style have often been used interchangeably yet they have different meanings. Fashion is what is being worn by most, consistent of trends and fads. Style is a personal and distinct. It is not affected by changing times and is attuned to one’s personal taste and preference.

How does this affect what we choose to wear?

While it’s always great to dress well to boost our confidence, one may be tempted to buy the latest fashion just to keep up, which is a tiring pursuit as fashion never stops evolving. What may be trending fashion today may fade away in weeks, days even. Therefore, it’s better to develop personal style that is timeless.

Developing personal style is all about building a brand for yourself. Your style and image are tied to your success. By cultivating your own unique style, you can come off as more confident as you interact with people in different settings. Style is an extension of who you are, and you can know a lot about someone just by what they choose to wear. You stand out which then makes people more drawn to who you are.

Tips to acquiring personal style

  1. Narrow in what makes your style personal. If you’re more into casual wear than formal wear, let your wardrobe reflect that.
  2. Be creative. Cute and unexpected pairings will make you stand out. If pearl earrings with a denim jacket and black trousers makes you look good, then sell it and we’ll buy it.
  3. Do you boo. It’s easy to want to fit in but where’s the fun in that? Be yourself and be a trendsetter.

Personal style is your chance to tell the world who you are. As Yves Saint Laurent once said, “Fashion fades, style is eternal.”
