Thrifting – Shopping at a thrift store, flea market, yard sale, or closet raiding.

We will leave the closet raiding for a later date. Today, we look at thrift shopping, commonly known as mtush or mtumba. What is it good for? Aren’t second-hand items dirty? When you have Toss detergent, rest assured your clothes will be clean and the colours will remain bright.

Shopping for mtush is one of the best ways to find unique pieces of clothing. Unlike brand new clothes where identical pieces are sold at a given time, second-hand clothes are rare. The items come from different parts of the world and different seasons. You get a fresh look and get to stand out.

Another understated benefit to shopping for second-hand clothes is the positive impact on our environment. The making of clothes has proved to be very costly to the environment. This is compounded by fast fashion. People replace clothes more than they need to keep up with fashion trends. Each piece of second-hand cloth you buy is one less piece that could have ended up in a dumpsite. Re–use and recycle. It’s good for all of us.

Another great advantage to thrifting is affordability. Let’s face it. Times are tough and now more than ever, you want to see your shilling do more for you. Just as you go for high-quality detergent like Toss that cleans with one wash and get value for money, you want to save on the outfit too. These fits are generally more affordable and, in some cases, better quality than brand new outfits.

The next time you want a fabulous pair of jeans, a new blouse, or a fire pair of shoes, consider heading to a thrift shop. You might be pleasantly surprised. Remember to wash these items with Toss before wearing them.

Do you thrift, and if so, where do you do it? Tell us in the comment section below.
