Bipolar Weather

/bʌɪˈpəʊlə ˈwɛðə/

Noun (mostly used by Nairobi residents)

  1. Weather that is deceiving, especially when it comes to dressing appropriately – sunny one moment, cold the next, and raining the other.

It’s simple – we’re not allowing anything, be it a chilly, foggy morning, light drizzle or unforeseen downpour send your morning dressing routine into a frenzy. Here are five “bipolar weather” outfit additions:

Trenchcoat

It came from one of the most iconic pieces of military uniform, and became much more than an accessory. The history of the trench coat dates back over a century, and the reason it’s been around so long is one of the reasons why it’s on this list.

Tights

Tights (or leggings) come in a variety of colours and styles. Which is quite welcome, when you need to brighten up those grey days a bit. Looking for an accessory that offers function and style? Sign tights up. Take it further than classic black if you can, pair it with the right skirt and shoes, and you’ll be like “bipolar weather who?”

Thigh High Boots

Thigh high boots offer more warmth than knee high or, obviously, ankle boots. They’re also evolving to be more versatile than ever. They don’t even have to be heeled, which is key when you need to do some walking around downtown Nairobi.

Cute Little Umbrella

Does anyone feel the same – some sense of defiance to mother nature – whenever it starts to rain and you whip out an umbrella? If you don’t, you should start – it’s a really good feeling. Anyone who’s serious about combating bipolar weather should have a cute little umbrella in their bag. These are just facts.

Wellingtons

This is just a different (better-sounding) way of saying gumboots. Have you ever fallen victim to flash floods in Nairobi? It’s one of the worst experiences, especially having to wade through pools of murky water, ruining your shoes.

Wellies are your best bet to survive flash floods. Granted, they are quite a gamble though, because they aren’t the easiest thing to have to carry around, especially when it ends up not raining.

So there you have it, everyone – a couple of wardrobe items that you need to have the confidence to deal with Nairobi’s bipolar weather.  You don’t have to worry about getting them dirty, either – Toss has a wide variety of detergents guaranteed to get the dirt out, and leave the bright colours in.
