Thank you Dad

Dear dad,

There are a lot of things that I want to say about the amazing father you are but I am afraid that words aren’t sufficient to describe the amazing man you are.

Dad, thank you for always being there for us. Growing up you were and still are a hands-on parent. You made sure to check on our homework every evening. You were so present that you knew every teacher that taught us, what subjects we struggled in and those we excelled in. You kept all our report cards neatly from primary school to high school and attended every event we had. You even used to be among the first to arrive. Never late. Thank you.

You were not only there and hands on but also detailed about everything relating to us. You made sure that you personally bought us everything we needed for school so you would know every brand of pencil, pens and rubbers in case we lost ours and took someone else’s. Ha-ha

After high school, you lovingly helped me chose what I wanted to study. And when I got my admission letter, you went with me before the reporting date to show me around and also know where I would be living. Making sure to meet my roommates and their parents. Thank you for your love.

I learnt a lot about sacrifices from you. You made sure we had what we wanted even though it meant you were left without. Whenever we demanded something way out of your reach you sat us down and talked to us. And whenever we needed an ear because of something we had done wrong you would tell jokes in between then reprimand so we would laugh but still discipline us and once you were done you never mentioned it again.

You took every opportunity to make sure we learnt something. Whenever I tried my hand at cooking you would pretend that it was the most delicious meal even though we all knew it was terrible. My brothers would complain about it but you would tell them to stop and enjoy the wonderful meal. Looking back, I realize it was your way of encouraging me.

I really appreciate the time you came to pay me a visit on campus and brought me a cake for my birthday.

Dad, for all those times I left it unsaid, thank you. Thanks for being there for me, for showing me the way, for being patient with me even when I made it difficult for you. Thank you for believing in me and encouraging me to dream. Thank you for being such an inspiring presence in my life.

It takes a man of gentleness, patience, strength, and compassion to set the fine example of fatherhood that you have

Happy Father’s Day! I love you and appreciate you.
