Kapa is proud to have signed a ‘Memorandum of Understanding’ with Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation – Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition Project in February 2012. This MOU states that Kapa shall now carry out fortification in its edible products according to approved Kenyan standards. Kapa shall meet the conditions to utilization of the food fortification logo and display it on all relevant packaging materials according to the guidelines once approved by Kenya Bureau of Standards (KEBS)
Food Fortification is the addition of specific micronutrients (vitamins and minerals) to specific edible products. Food fortification has been applied with success in both developed and developing countries to address and prevent micronutrient deficiencies.
Food Fortification Facts:
• The micronutrients added are available to the body to use from food that is fortified.
• Fortification does not produce undesirable changes to the appearance, texture, taste and smell of the food.
• Fortification does not substantially increase the price of food.
The Kenya National Food Fortification Alliance was formed to spearhead this program. The membership to this alliance is drawn from various government ministries and parastatals, development partners and the industry. All brands and products that are part of the fortification programme will be able to inform consumers by carrying the fortification logo.
Kapa has already successfully fortified thirteen of its brands, namely Kasuku Cooking Fat, Seagull Cooking Fat, Prestige Margarine, Alpa Cooking Fat, Tilly Cooking Fat, Rina Deep Frying Fat, White Gold Cooking Fat, Special Bakers Compound, Rinsun Sunflower Oil, Soja Blended Oil, Rina Vegetable Oil, Captain Cook Corn Oil and Kapa Ghee, with Vitamin A.
